Mission Statement

All gifted students have the right to an education suited to their needs that challenges them to reach their full potential. The education of gifted learners must include experiences that are inspirational and allow opportunities for critical thinking, analysis, creativity, and enrichment. As gifted educators, we must be a mentor for our students and advocate for their needs educationally, socially, and emotionally.

Program Goals

  • To identify gifted learners through a variety of screening techniques.

  • To demonstrate skills in self-directed learning, thinking, and communication with others.

  • To use differentiated instruction tailored to the individual needs of all students.

  • To develop innovative products and performances that reflect individuality and creativity.

  • To acquire knowledge and skills in a complex, advanced manner.

Learner Outcomes

  • Students will acquire knowledge of leadership skills and will act respectfully and responsibly.

  • Students will acquire knowledge for problem-solving, gathering, and analyzing information.

  • Students will demonstrate knowledge and creativity through a variety of enrichment opportunities.

Transfer Student Policy

  • Scott City R-1 Schools accept students who were previously in a gifted program in the state of Missouri into the SEEK program, at any grade level.

  • Scott City R-1 Schools accept students of military families and foster children that transfer into the district who were enrolled in a gifted program at their previous school, into the SEEK program, at any grade level.

Nonpublic School & Virtual Student Participation

Any student may be enrolled in and attend a public, virtual, private, parochial, homeschool, or a combination of schools during the day. No artificial barriers can be placed in the way of the nonpublic school student's participation in the state-approved gifted program. However, the following guidelines must be met:

  • The student must reside in the district, and the school's boundary, where they wish to attend the state-approved gifted program.

  • The student must meet or exceed the placement criteria of the program in the school district.

  • The student or their parents/guardians are responsible for transportation to and from Scott City School to the gifted program.

  • If testing is required for placement, Scott City R-1 policies, procedures, and timelines should be utilized as they would be for any transfer student to the district.

Review of Placement Decisions

The Scott City R-1 Gifted Education Department (SEEK) may consider an appeal if there is new information that was not available at the time of the initial referral. Parents/Guardians requesting an appeal must follow the steps in the appeal process.

  1. Contact the Gifted Education Coordinator/Teacher to discuss the screening results.

  2. After the discussion with the Gifted Education Coordinator, a parent/guardian may or may not choose to proceed with the appeal process. If a parent/guardian chooses to continue the appeals process, they must complete the "Parent/Guardian Appeal Form."

  3. Please return the form to the middle school office.

  4. Parents/Guardians will receive written notification of the appeal committee's decisions within 10 (school) days of the meeting. All decisions made by the appeals committee are final.

Acceleration of Students

Content-Based Acceleration

  • Provides students with advanced content, skills, or understandings before the expected age or grade level. Typically, students remain with their peers that are the same age and in the same grade for most of the school day, but receive higher grade-level instruction in an advanced grade.

  • Forms of content-based acceleration include single-subject acceleration and dual-enrollment classes.

Grade-Level Acceleration

  • In practice, a student is placed in a higher grade-level than is typical given the student's age, on a full-time basis, in order to provide access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities. Typically, this shortens the number of years a student spends in kindergarten through twelfth grade.

  • May include early entrance to school, whole-grade acceleration (grade-skipping), and early entrance to college.
